Chapter Endorsements

Brothers of Iota Upsilon Lambda Chapter, Montgomery County, MD | April 23, 2012

Dear Brothers:

As one of the top ten largest chapters in Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Iota Upsilon Lambda of Montgomery County, Maryland proudly endorses Brother Mark S. Tillman for 34th General President of the Fraternity.

IUL has a rich and proud tradition of moving Alpha forward. The Fraternity IUL chartered on December 13, 1970. Since that time, the General Organization has recognized IUL as “Most Outstanding Alumni Chapter of the Year” seven times in 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1980 and 1981. The Fraternity recognized two chapter’s brothers, Hanley Norment in 1976 and Lynwood Randolph in 1995, as “National Man of the Year.” In 1984, six members of IUL, Alfred Bailey, John Harvey, Oscar Little, Eddie Madison, Sr., Harold Navy, and George Sealey, created the vision to erect a national memorial in Washington, D.C. in honor of Brother Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., realized in an official dedication by President Barack Obama on October 16, 2011. IUL spearheaded the effort that resulted in the Fraternity placing a memorial marker at the gravesite of Jewel Brother Robert Harold Ogle. In the late 1990s, IUL acquired and renovated the Smithville Colored Schoolhouse, originally built in 1927 to provide black students a better opportunity for education. Today, IUL operates the “Colored Schoolhouse” as a museum and community education center and a meeting place for the chapter.

Since its chartering, IUL has endeavored to positively impact the community by implementing the Fraternity’s national programs and other local programs, such as the Black Youth Achievement Awards, the Boys to Men Mentoring Group, the Black Heritage Program, and the widely recognized Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Breakfast. IUL has also endeavored to make its mark in the Fraternity as well by assuming key leadership roles. Five of the chapter’s past presidents either currently lead, or most recently led, national committees of the Fraternity: The National Elections Committee (Russell Campbell Sr.), The National Membership, Standards and Extension Committee (Tony Cheatham), The Jewels Heritage Project (E. Eric Elmore, Esq.), The Health & Wellness (Dr. Michael A. Smith), and The Military Brothers Committee (Dr. Langston D. Smith).

Similarly, IUL believes Brother Mark S. Tillman, through his vision and character, presents the best candidate to move Alpha forward and positively advance the community. His platform articulates a clear roadmap to navigate the fraternity through the unsteady path it currently faces. Brother Tillman’s platform proposes three broad principles: first, safeguard our corporate identity, brand, structure, and affiliations; second, encourage brothers to stay engaged in the fraternity from college life through professional life; and third, continue to advocate for, and serve, our communities through national programs and special projects and through leveraging community and corporate partnerships. These principles provide the very foundation by which the fraternity and the community it serves may achieve greater heights.

For these reasons, among others, IUL endorses Brother Mark S. Tillman enthusiastically and without reservation for the next General President of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

Sincerely,
The Brothers of Iota Upsilon Lambda Chapter, Key #520

Brother Joe L. Allen, Jr.

Brothers of Xi Alpha Lambda Chapter, Prince William County, VA | March 28, 2012

Greetings Brothers,

It is with great pride and honor that we, the Brothers of Xi Alpha Lambda (XAL) Chapter, announce that the chapter has chosen to endorse Brother Mark Tillman in his candidacy for the office of the 34th General President of our beloved fraternity.

Xi Alpha Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Key #590 seated in Prince William County, Virginia is one of the ten largest chapters of Alpha and the 2012 Virginia Association of Chapters of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. (VACAPAF) Chapter of the Year. The men of Xi Alpha Lambda Chapter are a cross section of the local community, many of whom are military officers (active duty and retired), government professionals, educators, engineers and businessmen. We are leaders in the community and consistently work to project the positive image of Alpha men as Servants of All. In terms of leadership qualities, we recognize the value of strong vision coupled with common sense leadership, as well as the high level of preparedness necessary to be a leader in an organization of leaders. It is evident, by taking careful notice of Brother Tillman’s experiences at the chapter, district, regional, and national levels and his respective achievements at each, that he is uniquely prepared to assume the mantle of leadership of this great Brotherhood at this critical time in our history.

We also believe in strategic roadmaps that provide measurable milestones in achieving our collective goals. Brother Tillman’s “Roadmap to Excellence” that he employed in his previous role as Midwest Regional Vice President, based upon the Fraternity’s Strategic Plan, provides evidence that he shares in the vision for the fraternity and has the experience to prove that he will serve as a responsible steward of that progress with the necessary level of transparency and measurement along the way.

Most importantly, we believe in Brotherhood and working to improve Brotherhood through open dialogue and fraternal interactions. Brother Tillman has shown time and again that he will use all modern means at his disposal to be accessible and accountable at all times. In his interactions with Brothers across the country, as well as those here in the Northern Virginia area where we reside, he has proved himself to be available, attentive and ready to act upon the governing principle of this organization…that which we call “the will of the Brotherhood,” no matter the designations, whether College or Alumni or from whatever areas of the globe that Brothers may reside.

It is for these reasons, and many others, that we the Brothers of Xi Alpha Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., stand ready to make our own investment into the future of this Brotherhood and support the candidacy of Bro. Mark Tillman, candidate for the office of the 34th General President of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

Fraternally,

The Brothers of Xi Alpha Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

Bro. Clifford M. Wilborn, Chapter President

Brothers of Zeta Lambda Chapter, Newport News, VA | March 28, 2012

Brothers in Alpha,

In each era there comes a critical point for brothers to make a crucial choice upon the direction of our beloved Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Now is our time to make that important decision for the positive vision and course in conducting and executing the future business of Alpha—our 34th General President. For the past two years, we all have been deeply involved in the rhetoric, performance, and auditions of the campaign until we now have two candidates vying for our vote. Throughout our attendance at conventions, one-one presentations, and media blitzes by the candidates, Zeta Lambda Chapter has carefully and tediously reviewed the vision, platforms, experience, proven leadership, managerial skills, essence of brotherhood, sincerity, humbleness, and integrity of each individual; the choice is clear. It is our honor and privilege to fully make a Zeta Lambda investment for the betterment of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. by endorsing Brother Mark S. Tillman for 34th General President.

Brothers of Theta Upsilon Lambda Chapter, Fort Wayne, IN | January 7, 2012

Dear Brothers Greeting from Theta Upsilon Lambda,

It is our pleasure to add to the numerous letters of support for the candidacy of Brother Mark Tillman as the next General President of our great fraternity.  Brother Tillman is devoted to the continued growth and protection of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. as illustrated in his Alpha Investment platform.

Theta Upsilon Lambda (TUL) Chapter was founded on January 6, 1966 in Fort Wayne, Indiana by 11 captivating Alphamen who had all been initiated into the Fraternity while undergraduates at various colleges throughout the United States. These men were the leaders, educators, activists, and voice for the local African-American community at that time. They exemplified the spirit of being an Alpha man.

Theta Upsilon Lambda Chapter is proud of the work Brother Tillman has done on behalf of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. and the Midwest region as the Midwestern Region Vice President.  We have worked directly with him and he has supported the efforts of TUL.  Brother Tillman is willing to make hard, data-driven decisions with compassion and respect our legacy.  Brother Tillman has demonstrated that he has the Alpha experiences, family, and corporate support needed to effective lead our fraternity.

We endorse Brother Mark Tillman in his candidacy for the office of the 34th General President.

Brother Tillman:

We, the brothers of Alpha Alpha Lambda Chapter, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated of Newark/Essex County, New Jersey, enthusiastically support your candidacy as our Fraternity’s 34th General President.

You are OUR CHOICE to lead us!

It is our pleasure to endorse your platform of safeguarding our corporate identity, investing in the General Office and Fraternity infrastructure, improving our communication efforts, re-energizing our commitment to service, and expanding our historic Brothers’ Keeper endeavors.

Brother Tillman, your visit to our district in November 2011 cemented our support. You impressed us with your long and faithful 20-plus year history of service to our dear Fraternity — from your college days at Dillard University, to graduate chapter service, district directorship and your national responsibilities as Vice President of the Midwestern Region.

More importantly, you came and listened to us!

It was during your visit that our Immediate Past President Brother Mark Hassell urged you to add psychological counseling support as part of your Brother’s Keeper initiatives. It was a ‘light bulb’ moment for all of us to realize that Alpha cannot be just about serving others — but as brothers, we must serve one another. And we will partner with you in this effort.

Above all, Brother Tillman, you have led by example. In Detroit, Michigan, where you served as area director, your good stewardship led to one-hundred percent (100%) of the chapters being listed in good standing. And to this day, because of your hard work, Michigan is considered a model district, both in your region, and across the country. You raised the bar!

Brother Tillman, it is our sincere belief that you possess the very qualities noted in Brother Peter Clarke’s ‘There Goes an Alpha Man’ — “…a man of humble faith, a credit to his race. There goes a man of conscious vast, with will to reach his goal. There goes a man of lordly rank of heroes stock and soul.”

We, the Brothers of Alpha Alpha Lambda endorse you, because you are Alpha Phi Alpha!

Sincerely,

Pierre A. Oscar
President, AAL Chapter

The Brothers of Kappa Epsilon Lambda Chapter believe in the concept and tenets of,The Alpha Investment.  We believe that as men, as a fraternity, as a race of people, and as a nation; we willcontinue to grow strong by maintaining our Alpha traditions that continue to pave the way for us to set a solid foundation into the future.

Kappa Epsilon Lambda Chapter was established in 1972 by men who were pioneers in the struggle for equality and justice in their community.  The Chapter was then, and remains today steadfast in serving our community.  Kappa Epsilon Lambda Chapter is the premier community service organization within our local area and the “cornerstone” of support for many in our community.  We do not take lightly the fact that community members call us the “Cornerstone Alphas.”

Our Fraternity is the most preeminent organization of its type in the world.  As such, it must have the very best leaders from within the fraternity.  After the dedication of the Martin Luther King Memorial the world has seen the ability of our fraternity to accomplish great tasks.  We believe Brother Mark Tillman is the type of leader and man who can lead our fraternity to even greater accomplishments in support of Dr. King’s dream and our global community.

Brother Tillman’s accomplishments as the Midwestern Region Vice President have not gone un-noticed.  We applaud your work with continually engaging the college brothers and understanding that they are in fact the foundational structure of our fraternity. Brother Tillman’s economic and fiscal IQ is off the charts and sorely needed at the fraternity’s corporate level.

Dear Bro. Tillman,

It is with great pleasure to announce that the brothers of the Pi Upsilon Lambda Chapter fully endorse the candidacy of Bro. Mark S. Tillman for 34th General President of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. The brothers of Pi Upsilon Lambda believe that the principle of your platform, The Alpha Investment, is what our dear brotherhood needs to move to the next level. Bro. Tillman, we are prepared to aid your campaign in any way to assure victory.

Pi Upsilon Lambda Chapter believes that our Fraternity is indeed at a crossroad. The next administration of our dear Alpha Phi Alpha must take the time to invest in the brotherhood and move the fraternity in a new direction. Pi Upsilon Lambda was founded in 1993 as a reclamation chapter with 61 charter members and in 1994, receiving a certificate for 300% reclamation. Our mission continues to this day to reclaim, retain, and train brothers in the workings of Alpha. Brother Tillman, your platform represents to us the type of attention to detail to maintain a delicate balance of moving forward, protecting the brand as well as attending to the infrastructure needs of the House of Alpha for economic stability as well as building brotherhood. A grand house cannot be maintained without economic stability and fiscal transparency. A grand house cannot be maintained if the bonds of brotherhood are not supported and maintained by those who have entered the House. Your fiscal plans are not smoke and mirrors, but based on years of experience as the Midwestern Region Vice President. After consultation with our chapter membership, it is indeed a privilege to provide our support in your quest for the 34th General Presidency of our beloved Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated. We endorse your efforts to move our brotherhood onward and upward!

Fraternally.
